In the 'Sys Vol' folder you will find a whole bunch of sub folder named _Restore, under that folder will be a whole bunch of RPxxx folders, pick the latest one of these folders. It will allow you to restore the last working registry backup, and would save you a ton of work restoring drivers/setting etc. That will work, but one thing I would do differently is instead of copying the registry hives from the recovery folder they mention, I'd grab it from the 'System Volume Information' folder (this is where windows keeps the system restore data). Your best bet is to plug it into another machine, then boot to the recovery console on the XP CD. Connecting the drive to another machine will allow you to replace the registry hives, but you may run into some permissions issues.
